I only met my grandparents once – I was a toddler, so I have only a fleeting image of old people who were strangers to me. My parents lived nowhere near their two families and after that visit, I never saw my paternal grandparents again. My mom and dad grew up next door to each other, with parents who were best friends. My maternal grandmother lived a long life, and I had a chance to meet her while I was in the Navy. She had flown out to visit my mother, and I flew up there and spent the day. She was so proud of her “military girl” 🙂 and that meant the world to me. I have always wished I had that kind of extended family.
